I WANT TO GO TO THERE

atom

ATOM is a performance by Monolake and Christopher Bauder for a matrix of 64 gas balloons, lights, and sound. You can see it tomorrow evening at Berghain in Berlin.

A room is filled with deep, evolving noises from a four-channel sound system. An eight-by-eight array of white, self-illuminated spheres floats in space like the atoms of a complex molecule.

Through variable positioning and illumination of each atom, a dynamic display sculpture comes into being, composed of physical objects, patterns of light, and synchronous rhythmic and textural sonic events. Change, sound, and movement converge into a larger form.

The height of the helium balloons is adjusted with a computer-controlled cable, whilst the internal illumination is accomplished using dimmable super-bright LEDs, creating a pixel in a warped 8×8 spatial matrix.

The sonic events, the patterns of light, and the movement of the balloons are manipulated in real time as a 45-60 minute-long performance.

MAKE IT STOP!

My one and only wish for design in 2009 is that designers would stop with the weird “type art.” It’s not a trend, it never was. It’s bad and it makes my eyes hurt.

Please go away.

Thanks.

on a lighter note

I’ve finally come to my New Year’s Resolution. Maybe not so such a New Year’s Resolution as a life goal.

My goal as a designer is to some day be featured in a national magazine as a “Designer to Watch”.

Every year in January, my design magazines are touting the People to Watch in (insert year here), or Trendsetters for (insert year here). Every year, I’m insanely jealous of every single designer featured in those magazines. So really, the only way to cure that ridiculous streak of jealousy is to be one of them.

maybe i’m not so bad afterall…

On a day that I’m feeling especially down in the dumps about my design abilities, I find this image posted on The Dieline and the world seems a bit brighter.

Last semester in my Package Design we were challenged to produce an entirely new product from an existing brand. My group chose to create the packaging for Optic Adrenaline, energy eyedrops by Rockstar. We ended up using one of the logos I designed, and it looked strikingly similar to the G on these Goundry-G wine bottles, except the G was an O.

Turner and Duckworth

And I can’t help but note, is it just me, or does that G look slightly “rockstar’ish” for a bottle of wine?

and the angels sang…

Well, the Polaroid angels anyway. Just saw this today posted on Fill/Stroke.com

The Impossible Project

Essentially, a group called Impossible b.v. has acquired Polaroid’s old equipment and factory and plans to re-invent and start production of instant film for vintage Polaroid cameras.

The Impossible Project

The Impossible mission is NOT to re-build Polaroid Integral film but (with the help of strategic partners) to develop a new product with new characteristics, consisting of new optimised components, produced with a streamlined modern setup.
