Death by Chocolate Cake

My stomach has been grumbling at me all morning, which means any food-related internet thing I run across is killing me.

For example, Stylish White Female (who is supposed to be posting pictures of her killer outfits) is blogging about baked potatoes and kale. To top things off, I just found out from a friend on Facebook that today is National Chocolate Cake day.

Gah! What’s a girl gotta do to get a giant piece of chocolate cake?

P.S. I also like any kind of cheesecake.

In Search of Deliciousness

Some of you may already know that my husband and I love to spend quality time in the kitchen (proof here and here), but that doesn’t mean we don’t love a great restaurant!

Since before Silicon Valley was even a twinkle in our eye, I’ve been following a great blog called SFoodie. Over the past year or so, it’s been fun to follow all of the great food markets, festivals, and featured restaurants, and now I can’t wait to actually try them!

Honestly, is it even possible to not look at something like this and want to find it’s source?

Typomundus 20

Oddly enough, I started writing this love-post about my favorite book in November and never finished it. But, with all of my design books sitting on a bookshelf in California, I guess absence really does make the heart grow fonder.

I’m really picky when it comes to purchasing design books. I’ll think about buying a book for 6 months before actually biting the bullet. That being said, my Typomundus 20 book was not that type of a purchase (I thought about buying for a whole 30 seconds), and for that I’m glad.

The purpose of Typomundus 20 was to preserve and document the most significant typography of the 20th century (which it does) and nearly puts every other design book to shame in the process. If you have to know, it was a significant source of inspiration behind my BFA thesis.

I count myself extremely lucky to have a copy with no rips, tears, and all pages in tact. And the best part? Nearly 4 years ago I snagged my copy for a mere $30. Look online now and you’ll find copies going for anywhere from $75 to $100.

Hans Neuburg, Anton Stankowski, Lou Dorfsman, Piet Zwart, Hiromu Hara, and Hermann Zapf, you’ve created a masterpiece, and for that, I’m forever grateful.

A huge thanks to Unit Editions for soothing my soul with these gorgeous Typomundus 20 images

Type is for Kids

Remember the call for entries for my Social Typography Experiment? I’m getting close to the end of the vectorizing process and whew! What a process it’s been.

This afternoon I was working on one of the kiddie submissions (thanks to my sister for soliciting those) and was completely blown away by the arrangement of the letters on the page. I’m loving how each word flows into the next. And how cute is the little bug creature on the side?

Oh, and you’re still more than welcome to send me submissions. Just go here for all of the information.

On a Different Note

Disclaimer: This is another post about me moving. If you’re tired about me blogging about our move, you can stop here.

Now that just my mom is reading, here goes. Lately I’ve been verbally dreaming about all of the great things waiting for me in California, but just today it hit me that there are actually a lot of things I’ll miss about Fort Wayne.

JK O’Donnell’s
Most people who know us know that we love, love this little Irish pub in downtown Fort Wayne. In fact, on any given Friday night, you could find us tucked into a corner or hanging out at the bar. We’ve met some of the most interesting (and most odd) people there.

Cheap cost of living
Where else can you rent a 1,000+ square foot apartment for a little over $600?

Lots of friends and acquaintances
After moving to Indiana less than 5 years ago, I knew about 5-10 people. And now, I can’t count the number of great people I’ve met.

My Aptera co-workers
I started off at Aptera as a lowly intern. A year and a half later, they took a gigantic chance and made me the web team lead. It’s been a fun challenge, but the best part has been all of the great people I’ve been able to work with.

Our nephews (and the rest of our Indiana family)
Who wouldn’t miss these adorable little guys?! Seriously though, my husband’s family graciously accepted this quirky Kansas girl into their lives. I’ve got amazing in-laws.

With all of this said, after being apart for nearly a month, I’m really ready to spend some quality time with my favorite man. January 29 come quickly!

My Husband the Chef

Seriously ladies. Every woman wants a guy who can cook like this.

I can’t believe it took me this long (and living apart for a month) to realize how amazing my husband is in the kitchen! And most of it is even vegetarian. So proud!

Are you not drooling yet?!

Dreaming of February

My little section of Indiana is covered in a thick blanket of cold, wintry snow, so I’m dreaming of a warmer climate. T minus 18 days!
