Leading an experimental type workshop

Last Friday I stood in front of approximately 75 students to give an artist lecture and lead an experimental type workshop. Here’s a taste of the awesomeness that ensued.

In short, it was amazing and I’ve got a few hundred pictures to edit. More to come.

Go feet, go!

I love to travel.

My dad spent a decent portion of his career traveling to interesting places. At the end of every one of his trips, my brother and I would wait with gleeful anticipation to see what exciting souvenir he had brought home for us.

Because of that, it’s no surprise that my dream is to live on a different continent in a country that doesn’t speak English at some point in my life. Until then, I’ll give you feet pictures from my domestic travels.

Feet Travel East

We spent most of last week on the east coast with my husband’s family. We hadn’t seen them since December last year, so it was fun to catch up and spend time playing with our adorable niece and nephews. My sister-in-law is a phenomenal photographer (check out her work here) so it’s no surprise that we’ve got great photos from the trip.

I’m sure it’s no coincidence that I’ve got more than one photo against a blue background, since it happens to be one of my favorite colors. There isn’t much that doesn’t look good against blue.

While most of our week was split between New Jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, it was fun spend a few hours in NYC and even meet up with a friend. I also realized that while I love the quaint, laid-back vibe of San Francisco, I also kind of love the gritty, fast-paced thrill that is New York City.

As you may have guessed, there’s more feet to come. I enjoy giving context and meaning to all of my feet photos, but there may need to be a feet dump soon. You won’t mind, right?

Feet: Taking Me Places Since 1983

Living in a highly walkable city without a car means I walk. A lot.

Feet on Muni

Given the choice to walk a mile or take public transit, 9 times out of 10 I’ll choose to walk. There’s nothing like immersing yourself the beautiful, crazy, enchanting streets of San Francisco. That’s why I’ve decided to start a series on feet.

Feet at home

Feet are a grossly under appreciated part of the body. Especially mine. I can count the number of times on one finger I’ve gotten a pedicure, so it’s time they get some love.

This series will introduce you to the places my feet go and other feet they meet. Feet portraits if you will. Some people take pictures of food. I take pictures of feet. There’s more to come. Enjoy.

Things I hear on public transit

I love public transportation. Yes it’s dirty and unreliable, but the true gems of public transit are the people. Take a boring 30 minute bus ride, throw in a crazy, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for greatness.

Recently, I started cataloguing some of the amazing things I overhear. The phrase below was probably repeated no less than 50 times within the span of 15 minutes. You can expect more of this series in the near future.

This is fun already, isn’t it?

Wake up like an egg. Sunny side up

And once again Kansas steals my heart

It happens every time I visit.

We spent an exceptionally short weekend in Kansas to celebrate my 10 year high school reunion and spend time with my mom and youngest brother.

In a little over 36 hours, we made time for a barbecue picnic with classmates, playing tetherball with my cousins’ adorable kids, riding in my hometown’s annual Memorial weekend alumni parade, and attending the Alumni Dance at the Country Club (which somehow caught fire).

Our class, who was better known for socializing rather than organizing, was in charge of the annual alumni dance this year. As one of my classmates honestly commented, “Only the class of 2002 can have the country club catch on fire at our class reunion! In charge of dance? Check. In charge of building and safety? Epic fail.”

Here’s a recap of the weekend in images.

Memorial Weekend in Kansas

Images in order: Waiting on BART, two kinds of feet on the deck, my mom swinging with one of my cousin’s twin boys, Vince playing tetherball with my cousin’s children, Kai shaking, more feet on the deck, my dad’s First Day of School diploma, my grandmother (my dad’s mother), feet in Omaha.

As a side note, you’re seeing lots of feet because I’ll be starting a new series of feet portraits cataloguing places my feet see and other feet they see.

A Hiking Weekend

This weekend, after a few months hiatus, we went hiking.

Since moving to California nearly a year ago, we’ve enjoyed taking advantage of the diverse geography (hiking, wine, ocean, etc), but without a car, and primarily public transportation at our disposal, hiking has proven to be slightly more difficult than when we had a car and were living in the south bay.

On Saturday we rented a Zip Car and headed down Highway 1 past Pacifica, to the McNee Ranch State Park. We were kind-of celebrating my birthday with this hike (I know, I’m a sick person to choose physical activity for a birthday celebration) so my husband allowed me to select the trail. A sad mistake for our bodies.

I chose a ‘strenuous’ trail (ha!) thinking it would be closer to moderate for us — we’re more in-shape than the average person, right?. Turns out, strenuous (defined as demanding or requiring vigorous exertion; laborious) was actually closer to difficult (defined as not easily or readily done), but the views were amazing. We hiked from sea level — literally from the ocean — to nearly 2000 feet in about 3.5 miles. It was painful, it was crazy, and it was beautiful. At one point, we were able to see the ocean and the East Bay at the same time and San Francisco was a glorious peninsula separating the bay from the sea.

We also enjoyed a beautiful Sunday evening along Embarcadero in the city. While the Golden Gate Bridge is the landmark of the city, I argue that the Bay Bridge (and surrounding area) is the most beautiful.

Memorial Day in Pictures: Highway 1

We’ll be moving to San Francisco in just 2 weeks and plan to sell our car, so on Monday, Vince and I took advantage of still having a car and ventured out on a day trip down scenic Highway 1.

We made no specific plans and had a blast stopping at random road-side stands, getting close up to sea lions, taking 17 Mile Drive, wandering through Monterey and Carmel, and of course, eating delicious food.
