Strike my Fancy

This evening I was planning to announce my new Commute Design challenge for the month ahead, but sadly, I forgot my trusty Virgin Mobile wireless card, which meant no world wide web on the train for me. And no www means no blog post.

Rather than no post at all, I’ve decided to start a new weekly column called Strike my Fancy. You may remember that last week I created an email collage from emails that I’d been collecting over the past week.

I receive sooo many emails that I’ve decided it might be fun to give you a peak into my inbox each week. Here’s week 2 of Strike my Fancy.

Images you see here are from Net-a-Porter, Apple, SWSX, Design StoryUniqlo, Piperlime, Erdem: The Interview by Net-a-Porter, and Threadless

Commute Design Project 05: Threshold to Fire

Many of you may already know my husband is a software developer, and a good one at that. But you may not know that he’s also quite an innovator and thinker. Not only does he spend his days at Apple writing code that looks like Greek to most of the world, he’s constantly thinking of new ideas.

The other night I caught him sketching on his iPad and begged him to send me a screenshot. The elements all tie together very nicely, plus I love merging science, math, and design — the results are always gorgeous.

Parts 2, 3, and 4: Road Trip to California

At this point it’s safe to say that our moving adventure is nearly complete. We made it to our brand new home just in time to unpack and head out for a late, quiet dinner on New Year’s Eve.

Part 2: Kansas to Salt Lake City
We left Kansas on Tuesday morning with at grueling 15 hours and 3 states of driving ahead of us.

Driving through Nebraska is like driving through Western Kansas. Not an exciting view.

Gorgeous weather ahead! …or so we thought

And then came the 60 mph winds

Part 3: Salt Lake City to Reno
The third part of our move was quite the adventure, with the most memorable being our attempt to put chains on our tires in a sudden blizzard outside of Salt Lake City, and then being stuck in Reno, Nevada for a night.

We came across this odd sculpture while crossing the Bonneville Salt Flats. It looked like something out of a Dali painting.

Little did I know that 20 minutes later I would be attempting to help my husband put chains on our tires in a wild blizzard!

Part 4: Reno to San Jose
After waiting out the night in a town that feels like one giant casino, we got up early to conquer Donner’s Pass *insert Donner’s Pass joke about eating each other here* and the rest of the drive was a breeze.

Getting ready to head up to the infamous pass

On Saturday, my husband took me past his new office where I was able to catch my very last Aptera Around the World pictures.

If you ever come to visit, be prepared for the deliciousness of Pinkberry. It’s my new frozen treat addiction. Yum!

I’m safely back in Indiana for the remainder of January to finish out my job at Aptera, while my husband is enjoying the much warmer climate of our new home.

Speaking of jobs, I’m still looking for one in the San Francisco area. If you hear of any cool design boutiques who are hiring, let me know!

California Girl

Last Thursday my husband accepted a job at Apple in Cupertino, California. The past couple of days have been a complete whirlwind of planning, packing, downsizing, and dreaming of a warmer place (as I write this it’s 23 Fahrenheit and near whiteout conditions outside).

We’ll be moving over Christmas and I plan to document the 3-4 days of pure awesomeness right here!

the iphone wha???

iphone

I just heard about this today. What a copout. Apple, my love still abounds for you, but this is low…this is really, really low.

The following is pulled directly from an article posted today on ComputerWorld:

“Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will begin selling Apple Inc.’s iPhone later this month, employees at several stores in the discount retail chain said today.

Wal-Mart’s corporate headquarters, however, would not confirm that the company will sell the iconic iPhone. A spokeswoman said only that “we are not making an official announcement at this time.”

Over the weekend, reports surfaced claiming that Wal-Mart, the largest retailer in U.S., would soon sell one or more models of the iPhone. On Saturday, for example, the San Jose Mercury News cited managers and employees at stores in Northern California who said that they were undergoing sales training and that the iPhone would be on store shelves either shortly before or right after Christmas.”

blast from the past.

hi. i’m a mac.

I found this today at work while searching for a good picture of a laptop that I didn’t have to pay for. Too good to pass. (Please note the PhoneNet connector and cool casual denim shirt.) Just goes to show, Apple has always defined cool.

So if you see me in an untucked white wash denim shirt with several scratched floppy disks hanging out of my backpack, and talking on a Nokia 100 cell phone, you’ll know where my allegiance lies.
