DESIGN #8: IF YOU LOVE IT...
After I left work this evening, I was contemplating not designing anything when I got home. The day was pretty hectic and I was really tired. However, once I was home, I realized that my Design a Day exercise has quickly become one of my favorite parts of the day. There isn't any pressure to come up with something the client likes - I can do whatever I want. Some days I'm really happy with my design, other days not-so-much...and that's okay. This design was inspired by some fashion photography I found on Ffffound.com of models interacting with typography. Anyone who knows me at all is aware of my slight typography obsession, so anything interacting with typography gets me excited. I'm not completely sure where (or more importantly why) I came up with today's quote, it just popped into my head.
Hope you enjoy!
DESIGN #7: HARD TO READ TYPOGRAPHY
Today's design was inspired by Simon C. Page's Hard to Read Typography series. He's a self-taught designer living who is passionate about design, typography, and geometric art. You can check out his beautiful Flickr group here. Do you know what it says?
DESIGN #5: SAVE THE EMPIRE!
SVA SUMMER PROGRAM IN ITALY
In lieu of Design #5 this evening (you'll see it tomorrow) here's my dream summer vacation. I'll be taking donations.
Spend two weeks studying visual communication—especially typography—in Venice and Rome, the birthplace of Western typographic tradition. Study with the best typographers in Italy. Visit the Trajan Column, the Pantheon and the Arch of Titus. Examine inscriptions on Roman buildings and monuments that have long been a typographic ideal. Our workshop in design history, theory and practice is an intensive period of study that enables students to research and analyze the roots of typography, draw type and letters from the classic models while practicing contemporary design with Italian and American designers and design historians.
The cost of tuition is not bad $6,700 and that covers pretty much everything except lunch and occasionally dinner. The application deadline is March 15 and there are limited openings.
While I get all googly-eyed about workshops like this, for some reason they also scare me out of applying. Fears like "I'll never be good enough" or "My skill level will be horribly low compared to everyone else there" always keep me from applying. So, with that being said, I probably won't be applying for for those who do - good luck!

DAY #4: AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE
DAY #3: MATH IS EASY
Looks like I'm on a vintage/retro kick this week. I found today's quote on a really great site by Chris Coyier called Quotes on Design. It's interesting, thoughtful, funny, and a great time killer.
